The Facts
Conflict and tension, between different peoples, has been present in Rwanda for several generations. On April 6th, 1994, all of that tension exploded when Juvenal Habyarimana, President of Rwanda, was assassinated on his return from a conference of African leaders. An elite faction, led by Colonel Theoneste Bagasora, implemented a new government and their plan to eliminate “it’s political opponents, including moderate Hutus, and the genocide of all Tutsis” (Gale). The top two militia groups involved in the coup de’ tat were the MRND (Interhamwe) and the CDR (Impuzamugambi). The United Nations sent troops but they were quickly withdrawn. There withdraw was followed by an intensification of the murders. Later that year, on July 19th the RPF (Rwandan Patriotic Front), led by Mr. Kagame, took control and the genocide came to an end.
